line as language

This work is part of a new series exploring the asemic line working with oil and wax on paper and birch panel. Asemic refers to writing which has no content. This body of work challenges the asemic paradigm by imbuing written gestures with rich emotional meaning. I am continuing my ongoing studio inquiry into the idea that 'what is not there is more important than what remains.’ Through the process of obscuring and revealing - and a good deal of erasure and iterative mark-making, knowing emerges like images revealed through fog lifted at sunrise. With direct mark making, I am joyfully mining the line and exposing the process of finding my visual way through spontaneity, energy, and vulnerability, inspired by abstract expressionists like Twombly and Frankenthaler, who also explored the marriage of tender and resilient.
